Grassland/savannah
Cameron Higgins
-Locations:
-The grasslands are located north of the Tropic of Cancer (23.5 degrees North). It is south of the Tropic of Capricorn (23.5 degrees South). There are large grasslands in Africa, South America, Eurasia, and North America.
-Climate:
-Summer temperatures normally rise over 100F. While winter temperatures can go down to -40F. It typically snows in the winter, fires start in the summer, and droughts happen in the summer. The temperature is mainly moist and humid. It is also very dry.
-Average annual precipitation:
-10-35 inches each year
-Average annual temperature:
-73.4F
-6 animals: Bison, Pocket Gopher, Wolf, Hawk, Coyote, and Prairie Dogs.
-Bison: A bison has flat top teeth and a digestive system that has adapted to eat grass. Their thick coat protects them from the harsh winters, and keeps them shaded in the summers. An interesting fact is their diet. Their diet is a variety of different things. They can eat whatever isa available.
-Pocket Gopher: They build underground tunnels for places to live and stay safe. This protects them from predators. Their sharp teeth are used for protection and for the foods they eat. An interesting fact is they are also called "true gophers".
-Wolf: Wolves have strong hind legs. They give them their speed and their aerodynamics. Wolves also have simple stomaches. This means they don't digest their food right away. They store the food for times when they can't find any food. An interesting fact is they are classified as digitigrade. This means there toes touch the ground when they walk, so they act as springs.
-Hawk: Hawks are known for having the best eyesight. Their eyesight is 8 times better than humans. They use this adaptations to track down prey from long distances. Their long, wide wings help them soar fast, and gracefully after prey. An interesting fact is their hearing is also nearly 8 times better then humans.
-Coyote: Their feet are adapted to the high grasses they run in to escape predators. Their thick fur keeps them warm in the winter, and on windy days. It can also help them camouflage. An interesting fact is when it gets cold, coyotes dig and mark their territory and find a place to keep warm.
-Prairie Dog: They bury themselves when getting chased by predators. They also use their cheeks as pouches to store food. An interesting fact is their diet is mainly grass.
-4 plants:Lupines, Buffalo Grass, Coneflowers, Queen Annes Lace
Lupines: This plants seedpod doesn't spread until it starts to fade. It then is followed by dispersal for the year following. An interesting fact is they are mainly found in southern and western parts of North America.
Buffalo Grass: This grass has long roots to reach out and find water from farther places to help them survive. An interesting fact, is harmful insects with poison do no harm to this grass.
Coneflowers: Their petals adapt to any weather. They can live through harsh weather. An interesting fact is they are called care free plants because they survive through everything.
Queen Annes Lace: This plant's leaves are toxic. When a human touches it, it irritates their skin. An interesting fact is they are called "wild carrots".
-4 interesting facts about my biome:
-1)In the winter, it can get up to 6 feet of snow.
-2)Some grasses can grow up to 7 feet tall.
-3)Grassland has only 2 seasons.
-4) There are lots of forest fires in the grassland.
