Temperate rainforest
Cameron Higgins
-Location: Found along some coasts.
Example: on the Pacific coast of North America, stretches from Oregon to Alaska (1,200 miles)
Another example is on the southeast coast of Chile in South America
-Climate: no distinct seasons (one is long and wet, and the other is short, dry and foggy) During wet seasons the temperature is 32F, and in the short seasons it is 80F
-Annual Precipitation: 350 cm = 137.795 inches
-Annual Temperature: 68F
- 6 animals that live in this biome : Caribou, Gorilla, Elk, Beavers, Raccoon and Black Bear
-Caribou: Adaptation-feet/hooves because they help the caribou walk on wet, soggy and snowy ground. Also their muzzle warms up the cold air before it moves to the lungs.
Interesting Fact: The caribou can also be called a reindeer.
-Gorilla: they have flat teeth that allows them to grind plants they need to survive. Also their dark fur helps camouflage in the woods/forest.
-Interesting Fact: Gorillas are the largest of great apes.
-Elk: Male elks use their antlers to protect themselves (they only have 6 month with antlers). During the months they don't have their antlers, they form groups with other male elks to help defend themselves. Another adaptations is their hooves. Their hooves help them walk in all the different climates. It also helps them protect themselves.
-Interesting Facts: The elk is the only large hoofed animal in the temperate rainforest
-Black Bear: This bear learns how to swim, and is able to cross rivers for good food sources. Another adaptation is their sense of smell. They use their keen sense of smell to find food.
-Interesting Fact: A black bear is an omnivore, which means they eat both plants and animals.
-Raccoon:They have clawed feet to help them dig holes and it gives them the ability to walk on whatever and have good grip. They also hunt at night, and their eyes have adapted and they use night vision to see.
-Interesting Fact: There are up to 7 different species of raccoons.
-Beaver: Beavers use their sharp top and bottom teeth to chew and break tree and/or woody vegetation. They use their flat, hairless, large tail to help themselves balance when gnawing on wood.
-Interesting Fact: They eat something called cambium, which is soft tissue that grows under the bark of a tree.
-4 plants that live in my biome: Sweet Gum Tree, Redbuds, Spring Ephemerals and Coastal Red Wood.
-Sweet Gum Tree: This tree grows spiky burrs with seeds in them. After they are fully grown, the tree drops them to the ground and they sit in the soil and protect the tree. An interesting fact is their leaves grow to 7 feet long.
-Redbuds: They have thicker, glossier leaves that help in a drought or forest fire. An interesting fact about this plant is it can come in different colors. It can be purple-red, brownish-red and base gray.
-Spring Ephemerals: They bloom before trees and shrubs can steal the sunlight. An interesting fact is they grow really fast, but they only grow a couple weeks.
-Coastal Red Wood: They use their long roots to connect to other trees roots. They do this to stay stable and in place during floods and high winds.
-4 interesting facts about the temperate rainforest:
-1) The forest floor is most likely always covered with water.
-2) 25% of medicine is made from materials in the rainforest.
-3)The temperate rainforest has 4 seasons; summer, winter, fall, and spring.
-4)There is at least 100 inches of rainfall every year.

The arrows represent where the energy is going. It is the flow of energy. The beaver eats the leaves from the Redbuds and the gorilla eats the beaver and the black bear eats the gorilla.
-You calculate the amount of energy at each level by dividing trophic level one by 10. The answer is the amount of energy for trophic level 2.
